Exploring the National Defense Authorization Act - Episode 8
We're back to another Monday and another episode of Exploring the National Defense Authorization Act. In today's skim we cover Subtitle I--Decorations and Awards and Subtitle J--Miscellaneous Reports and Other Matters.
Interestingly, we are still trying to figure out a couple things from long-ago wars, including:
- Whether veterans involved with Operation End Sweep (cleaning up our mines from Haiphong Harbor) should be eligible for a Vietnam Service Medal
- How bad the Agent Orange exposure is to people living in the Panama Canal Zone (possible dumping ground for the stuff after Vietnam)
- The establishment of the Atomic Veterans Service Medal for members of the Armed Forces who were exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of participation in the use of and testing of nuclear weapons (World War II)
- Authorization to give Marcelino Serna a Medal of Honor (World War I)
- Recession of Medals of Honor given for acts at the Massacre of Wounded Knee Creek on December 29, 1890 (American Indian Wars)
Also, the military is thinking about adding the Purple Heart to the list of service medal honorees listed on the military valor website. The top three medals (in order of importance) are: The Medal of Honor, The Distinguished Silver Cross, and The Silver Star.
Pretty long over-due stuff.
