Exploring the National Defense Authorization Act - Episode 6


As we plog (new word - combination of plough and slog) through the National Defense Authorization Act I am anxious to get this published so I can go ski Mount Jumbo. The weather is cold and since I'm No Wax Jack I should be able to get a bit of glide from the skis.

Today's perusal starts off with Special Victims where Sections 531-541 deal with sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking within the Armed Forces and the National Guard. President Biden set up an Independent Review Commission to deal with the subject and there is an extensive Trial Council Assistance Program to help train military legal representatives in this field of scope.

P.S. Mount Jumbo was closed so I dinked around up Sawmill Gulch in less-than-ideal conditions.

The New Library

Reading a review of Jorge Luis Borges's "Library of Babel" I was reminded of my recent trip to the new Missoula Public Library, which was built directly next to the old Missoula Public Library. The construction of the new library, while in plain view, had an air of secrecy to it and it wasn't until its Grand Opening that the new library finally stepped-out from the shadow of the old one. Juanita and I have been visiting the hospital a lot lately with post-surgery appointments where we park under St. Pat's Broadway Building and ascend to the fifth floor from the basement in an elevator. It's a very public elevator entrance where a set of glass doors work to dissuade transients, who might be hunkered down, from going up. The elevator entrance at the library struck me much the same way - a fancy-looking glass enclosure with its fanciness working to dissuade smelly bums from entering. Torstein's Process

Thank you Torstein Horgmo for the inspiration. I have always liked Torstein and now after watching a couple parts of FLYT I am re-stoked and re-inspired to create and to shred and to create some more. Thinking about where to go this early in the season my mind goes to Pattee Canyon and then to Marshall Mountain - a small local hill in East Missoula where I learned to ski. It's now closed. The great thing about Marshall is the night skiing - it's awesome, so when the natural terrain might not be so good at least it's fun to go out and enjoy the solace of winter at night. After watching this video -  https://youtu.be/904osEbQGA0  I'm just so pumped to see Marshall Mountain develop its face, add non-natural terrain, a new lift conducive for getting off and on at midmountain points to make hitting jumps easier, and then doing it all night long.
