Exploring the National Defense Authorization Act - Episode 5
The sections covered in this episode were a little dry and towards the end I ran out of steam. The subject matter, for the most part, pertains to court-martialing and reminded me of A Few Good Men - "You can't handle the truth!"
Some tidbits include:
- Prohibiting people convicted of a felony hate crime of joining the military
- The Army's Career Intermission Program
- The Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program where immigrants (and non-immigrants) can become citizens quicker by joining the military
- Seaman to Admiral-21 program where sailors can work their way up to commanders
- Captain's Mast - a term for important military meetings which, in the Navy, used to happen under the main mast of the ship and is now used to describe "non-judicial punishment" or the first step towards a court-martial
- The use of drones (RQ-11B Raven and the RQ-7B Shadow) by the National Guard
I also learned a little about Judith Bruner who was the first woman to serve as a P-3 Pilot in the Navy and was also the first female Navy pilot to fly through a hurricane! It looks like she now works for NASA as a senior manager at the Goddard Space Flight Center. So very impressive.
