Exploring the National Defense Authorization Act - Episode 2
Anxious to learn more about the National Defense Authorization Act of 2022, I jumped back into the legislation and got a little worn out this time. I can only imagine what congress goes through. It's exhausting!
In this episode there were a lot of references, in many different, nonadjacent sections mind you, to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or better known as PFAS. Turns out this stuff is pretty bad for humans and the military apparently has used it quite extensively as a fire-fighting foam, which has created a groundwater disaster.
Aside from PFAS, the sections covered today address such things as community involvement, building guidelines in regard to energy efficiency and resiliency towards natural disasters, long duration energy storage options, open air burn pits in Afghanistan, and climate change. Here are some helpful websites pertaining to the sections covered:
- Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (Army Community Services)
- Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (Military Installation Resilience)
- Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (in Data Centers)
- Long Duration Energy Storage
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel
- Bioremediation of PFAS
- Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility
- Science Based Targets
- The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
This is a wide spectrum of stuff and makes for interesting, light reading.
