Original Content Percentage

This post is the result of a simple little epiphany that was actually a reminder of why I did something in the first place. Something that has been so swept away that the realization of it is more than a memory, it's an awakening! It's a slap in the face. It's like the moment you remember why you came into a room and, sadly, how zoned-out you've been and how oblivious you now suddenly are.


I love to create stuff and feel productive and lately it's been bugging me how Facebook users fill the stream with so much re-circulated content. Looking back at my Twitter (@SkateparkMark) I see that I posted the above graphic on September 1, 2018 - the annoyance has been building for some time.

Sure, I share some stuff, but if you look down through my social wall you'll see a high percentage of original content. I'm wondering if Facebook could somehow show everyone's OCP (original content percentage), it might determine who I'm friends with haha.

Anyway, in resistance, I began to envision a social platform without a share button. A tool where users simply make posts for their own recollection. This idea is the genesis for May King Records (say it fast) and maybe, if viewed on a time-line, these records might look like a skyline - ah the establishment. And then it hit me. This blog is just that. Writing this blog is what I wanted to do all along and somehow social media has compromised the objective, muddied the water, distracted me so much that only after this May King warp has worn off am I able to remember what I'm doing here.

Oh what a relief it is! The need to write has been brewing and I've been patiently waiting for the subject matter to present itself and this morning it did.

Astroworld is Facebook

In the midst of a heated debate about Facebook, it occurred to me, and I haven't fleshed-out the whole concept yet, that basically the Astroworld tragedy is a microcosm of the Facebook tragedy. I joke that because I'm a Mark I can see where Zuckerberg was going with this. I mean, from an engineering standpoint it's pretty cool, however from the movie "The Social Network" it appears that Facebook was dreamt-up by a couple other guys who hired Zuckerberg to build it for them and he stole it. Maybe that's where all this started. Maybe if a thief didn't bring this machine to the table we (Facebook users - the world) might be faring better. Whatever the reason, there is vein of resentment for Zuckerberg and it's coming from Facebook users. Having worked at a broadcast television station, where we serviced anyone with an antennae, I received a lot of unhappy calls from viewers whenever our signal went out. The New Library

Reading a review of Jorge Luis Borges's "Library of Babel" I was reminded of my recent trip to the new Missoula Public Library, which was built directly next to the old Missoula Public Library. The construction of the new library, while in plain view, had an air of secrecy to it and it wasn't until its Grand Opening that the new library finally stepped-out from the shadow of the old one. Juanita and I have been visiting the hospital a lot lately with post-surgery appointments where we park under St. Pat's Broadway Building and ascend to the fifth floor from the basement in an elevator. It's a very public elevator entrance where a set of glass doors work to dissuade transients, who might be hunkered down, from going up.
